The Umpire strike


At the end of July, 1951, the league had just survived it’s biggest
tragedy and crisis: The beaning death of Otis Johnson.
Days later, the AFL was in crisis-mode again……..

To add to Halstead’s misery, Enterprise had an announcement
to make….

Somehow, Stephenson, Halstead, and Rip Hewes managed
to keep Enterprise afloat. The Boll Weevils would finish the
season and make it part way through the next one before finally
giving up the ghost and moving to Graceville, Florida. Meanwhile,
the umpire strike needed to be resolved…….
